Jameela and the Golden Lotus

The adventures of a South Asian girl co-created with school children and elderly South Asian women.

For the last five years, I have been been working with Asian women aged between 12 and 80 years old to learn about their aspirations, challenges, regrets and successes. I discovered that there is the lack of awareness of Asian female role models for young people. Children’s stories rarely feature strong South Asian women and the submissive stereotype is further reinforced by our patriarchal society. Armed with this knowledge, pre-pandemic, we set out to work with South Asian women and children to develop illustrated children’s digital fairy tale story book in London and Leicester.
