SOUTH ASIAN WOMEN & DEMENTIA

Pauhana's Groundbreaking Initiative to Empower South Asian Women Affected by Dementia in Leicester Receives National Lottery Funding

Leicester, UK - October 2, 2023 - Pauhana, a local community organisation committed to making positive changes in Leicester, proudly announces its innovative project, made possible by a National Lottery award from The National Lottery Community Fund. This generous funding enables Pauhana to launch its initiative aimed at improving the lives of 36 South Asian (SA) women aged 60 and above affected by dementia in Leicester's neighbourhoods of Highfields, Belgrave, Evington, and Rushey Mead.

With a mission to empower women and their families to openly discuss their experiences, access necessary support, and enhance independence, Pauhana's project addresses the critical lack of dementia awareness within South Asian families. These families often face barriers such as stigma and language constraints, hindering proper understanding and management of dementia.

The project will kicks off with personalised one-to-one sessions, tailored to individual needs for 12 women. Subsequently, these women will form three groups comprising a total of 36 participants, including both original and new members, along with their families. These groups will convene weekly for four weeks in a safe space for discussions, games, and icebreakers centred around dementia and related concerns.

"We aim to empower these women by providing them with the knowledge and support they need to better manage their health," says Ben-azeera Lela, workshop leader of the project. "Through culturally sensitive approaches and language accessibility in Hindi/Urdu, Punjabi, and Gujarati, we will ensure that every participant feels heard and understood."

Furthermore, the project's community involvement is central to its success. Through extensive research conducted in partnership with University of Leicester, Pauhana has engaged with SA families and individuals diagnosed with dementia to address their specific needs and concerns.

"This initiative aligns with our commitment to building strong relationships within the community. We're dedicated to amplifying the voices of these women and ensuring that their experiences inform every aspect of our work," adds Lela. "By fostering friendships and collaborating with local services we aim to create a supportive network for these women."

As Leicester grapples with the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis, this project serves as a beacon of hope for marginalised communities facing increased challenges. With a focus on inclusivity and collaboration, Pauhana's initiative sets a precedent for community-driven solutions to complex health issues.

"We extend our heartfelt gratitude to National Lottery players whose contributions have made this project possible," continues Lela. "Their support enables us to create meaningful change within our community."
