Window of Opportunity

An exhibition space to share stories through visual arts projections.

Window of Opportunity was developed in response to the many broken windows in Leicester’s deprived wards like Belgrave, Highfields, and St Margarets. The windows were covered up in T-shirts, MDF, newspapers, gaffer tape etc. during iDream. These windows belong to churches, historic buildings, homes, industries over 200 years old. These buildings have been converted to faith schools, community centres or derelict.

These broken and patched windows sparked a line of enquiry: compare them with the windows broken during civil or political unrest in the world. The shards of glass were stories of migrants who had moved to Leicester seeking refuge.

Partnered with East Midlands Trains, we worked with a range of young people and elderly communities to share their stories as they rebuild their lives.  The train station was selected as the exhibition site as it lent itself beautifully as the portal for migration and movement. The interaction between the passengers and the window were noted and projected. The stories were presented as a visual arts projections installation for the Leicester Train Station concourse during the festive period.

Window of Opportunity became a statement towards the changing landscape in terms of immigration, new communities and settlements.
